Oiva Toikka

Born in 1931, Finnish artist-cum-designer Oiva Toikka originally trained in ceramics, before switching to glass. Best known for his 'Birds' series for Iittala, his oeuvre is characterised by its pop art aesthetic and rich forms and colours. Toikka lives and works in the Finnish village of Nuutajärvi, where he collaborates closely with the glassblowers who bring his vision to fruition. Also a successful stage and costume designer, he has a clutch of awards to his name, including the Prins Eugen Medal and the Kaj Franck Design Award.
