Since establishing his studio in 1998, the French designer has tackled everything from a self-cleaning loo and a spoon, to chairs for Cassina and interiors for several Alain Ducasse restaurants. A graduate from the Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Création Industrielle and a former protégé of Philippe Starck, Jouin isn't interested in designing yet another product. His quest is to improve upon what already exists - by adding a small serration to a Nutella spreader to stop it slipping into a jar, for example, or by using laser-sintered nylon to form chairs that perfectly cocoon the user - for clients such as Kartell, Bernhardt and Alessi. In 2006 he teamed up with architect Sanjit Manku to increase the scope of his projects, a partnership later formalised with the creation of two distinct identities: Patrick Jouin ID, dedicated to industrial design, and Jouin Manku, which focuses on interior and exterior architecture.
