Do by Claska

Tokyo

Part shop, part gallery, Do (pronounced Doh) on the third floor of Claska hotel in Tokyo’s hip Meguro district has been launched as part of a wider remodelling of the building as a hotel-cum-cultural complex. Designer and shop director Takeo Okuma, a key member of the Claska team, has created a store that puts the unusual selection of products, drawn from all 47 of Japan’s prefectures, centre stage. Okuma even sourced the shop’s unconventional wooden fittings and furniture from various prefectures as he journeyed around Japan in search of new products and visionary concepts. A carefully edited selection of books on Japan and its creative output also is displayed. Half of the shop space is given over to a white-walled gallery where the nation’s leading young artisans are invited to display their work. Claska describes its efforts as a push to rediscover key Japanese values, such as craftsmanship and pared-down design, and place them in a contemporary context. On the same floor is the just-opened “Claska Room 302” – a separate space where innovative and unique products are exhibited and sold. A former winner of the Wallpaper* Best Hotel Award, Claska just keeps getting better.
