Located in the heart of Jardins du Palais Royal, at 114-21 Galerie de Valois, Stella McCartney’s first Parisian store opened last December. Designed by architects APA as an intimate 150 m2 space, the boutique appears naturally flooded with light through a series of eight windows facing the arcade. Inside, a combination of simple materials –light Japanese ash wood walls, white tactile ceramic tiles plinths, dark grey carpets rhythmed by bronze Arman marble floors areas, lacquer tray inserts and brass pull out shelves to display folded items - enhances the cool, modern feel that runs through the boutique with an undercurrent of feminity. Yet nothing to girly. Making the most of the long linear space, the fragrance area displays a stunning bloc of amethyst - which acts as an eye-catching window display - while two large changing rooms, clad respectively in carved wood and cardboard, echo at the other end. Expanding the designer’s usual range of materials, the new design is strengthened by a feminine colour palette of dirty, pale pinks and natural whites contrasting with accents or vivid blue and yellow. Staged in the middle of the different areas, three oval brass “rain units”, as Stella calls them, create a rainfall backdrop used to display the collection. Sculptural.
