Tiffany

Tokyo

Tiffany’s is “the best place in the world, where nothing bad can take place.” And architect Kengo Kuma’s redesign of the American jeweller’s Ginza–based flagship store serves to enhance that feeling. The front of the three-storey building, facetted with 292 honeycombed glass panels, resembles a finely cut gem – at night it twinkles like a diamond, while by day it reflects the streetscape like a silver charm. It’s Tokyo’s biggest jewel. A two-story atrium with a grey-stone floor and mirrored ceiling welcomes you as you enter the 1,100-square-meter space. The escalator to the first floor allows for a close-up look at Kuma’s signature thin wood drapes that line one wall and 7.5-metre-high, backlit walls of wafer-thin crystal stone. A smaller room on the first floor is finished in deep red, for customers who want to escape the throng to make a big decision. If you can take your eyes of the interior design you’ll discover an installation area where key Tiffany pieces from the past are displayed, as well as designs for sale by Elsa Peretti, Paloma Picasso and Frank Gehry.
